Primary Schools League Finale
It was glamour, glory and fun as we concluded the second edition of the schools’ league on 26th August 2017.
Out of the 22 schools that took part in this year’s edition, we had four finalists – two in the girls’ and two in the boys’ category. We had 16 schools taking part in the boys’ category, which was a double from last year’s number (eight). We also had our first girls’ schools football tournament which was a gala on the 27th July 2017 at Yanga playgrounds Busega.
For the boys, the schools were seeded into four groups of four schools each. Theirs started in March 2017 and played out the preliminaries during the first two months before the schools broke off for the first term school holidays in May 2017.
Upon resumption of school in June, the best two schools in each group qualified for the knock-out stages, and were drawn for the quarter finals. These were played throughout the month of July. The quarters and semi finals were played on home and away basis.
By the end of July, we had ABC Divine Foundation School Mutundwe and Uganda Martyrs Primary School Lubaga as the finalists in the boys’ category. In the girls’ gala, we had six schools that brought together over 100 primary school girls. At the end of the day, we had Arrows Academy and Jolly Primary School as the best two who then qualified for the finals.
On the D-day, the finale day on 26th August, we organised the finals at the playgrounds of Uganda Martyrs High School – Lubaga. We started with the curtain raiser game between Watoto Wasoka volunteers and the school teachers and coaches which Watoto Wasoka won 1-0.
All the four finalists (two girls’ and two boys’ teams) were smartly dressed in jerseys given to them by Watoto Wasoka for making it to the finals.
The girls’ finale started moments later. It pitted Jolly Primary School against Arrows Academy, and it was Arrows Academy who won 2-0.
In the hotly contested boys’ final, Uganda Martyrs needed a Abdul Karim Sengozi first half strike to defeat last year’s winners ABC Divine 1-0.
Thereafter, it was consolation for the runners up, and joys and dances for the winners. In the end, each of the 22 schools received two footballs and a certificate of participation, while the finalists won full sets of jerseys courtesy of Watoto Wasoka.
The finalists also won medals and trophies were given to the winners. We congratulate Uganda Martyrs Primary School and Arrows Academy for winning the 2017 Primary Schools League 2017 in the boys’ and girls’ categories respectively.
We thank all the schools that took part in this year’s league all the way from March till August. We also thank everyone who supported us throughout the league and made it such a great success. We thank the volunteers who attended each and every game and made sure they reported for, and about, every single game.
In a special way, we would like to thank Barbara and Jan who sponsored the Girls’ tournament from the gala to the finale. We want to thank Derrick, Lise-Lotte &family for sponsoring the boys’ finals to such a great success. And to everyone who offered a hand in anyway, thank you.
Until next year, we will be back bigger and even better. Watch this space.
